Talking to the Hand
I was lucky. I had a great sex ed teacher (Thanks Mrs. McDowell!) What made her great was her honesty. She was willing to address anything! But even with a wonderful sex ed teacher there were still many personal questions left unanswered. Why? Because students were too embarrassed to ask them. That’s why I think that sex ed of the future needs to include a legitimate website where teens can get their personal questions answered by trusted authorities like doctors, teachers and psychologists. Young people today are bombarded with sexual imagery. It is naïve to expect a sex ed program to be effective if it focuses on abstinence. In fact, I believe that holding back information from teens is treating them like children. (Hope I’ve made that point clear in my video.)
Please forgive the imperfections of my animation—I was in the middle of putting it together when a huge storm hit my town. I was among the one million Californians to lose power. After I freaked out, I did my best to finish my video with flashlights and the hour I had left on my computer battery. I put all of my hand drawn artwork together in an old-fashioned stop action animation. I even created my own song for the credits. Enjoy!
